The Brainy Bunch Wins Research Award

Vienna students impress judges at the World Invitational Open.

The Brainy Bunch First Lego League (FLL) team, which includes six 8th grade Kilmer Middle School students, won 2nd Place overall in the Research category at the FLL World Invitational Open hosted by the University of South Florida and Legoland on May 3-6. The Brainy Bunch earned the honor of representing Virginia and D.C. at the World Festival by winning the 1st place overall Grand Champion Award at the VA/DC State tournament in December.

McElveen Receives Young Leaders Award

Ryan McElveen, Fairfax County School Board Member At-large, was presented with the 2012 Charles Robb Young Leaders Award by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and Rep. John Dapogny receives Lifetime Achievement award and Vivian Morgan-Mendez a Fairfax County Government Volunteer award.

For more than 15 years, John Dapogny of Vienna has been the "ambassador" of Homestretch. His passion for the mission to help homeless families throughout Fairfax County is evident to everyone he meets. By serving on every board committee, he has been a strong contributing partner to the success and growth of Homestretch over the years.

On Sunday, April 15, the Washington D.C. Chapter of Childhelp Wings held its seventh annual Fashion Show at the Tysons Corner Bloomingdale’s.

Madison High Places Third at State Scholastic Championships

On the weekend of March 17 and 18, the Madison Chess team played six rounds of outstanding chess at Tysons Corner and took home the 3rd place trophy. Individual trophy winners included Paul Psarakis for 15th place, John Nothaft –best under 1200 rated-player, and Ben Ostapovicz–best under 1000, Raphael Ordonez–Best Unrated.

Walk on the Hill Graced with Sun and Warmth

Community views home gardens, relaxes to music.

The weather was postcard-perfect for the 2012 Windover Heights Walk on the Hill … heavenly blue skies, a bit of contrail here and there to lend a modern art pattern to the sky. Neighbors strolled and chatted, the Green Hedges Jazz Band and the Vienna Community Band played on an expansive lawn, and Windover homeowners served refreshments. The Old Time Machine performed at the historic cabin on Walnut Lane.

On Sunday, April 15 National Charity League, Inc.’s, Cherry Blossom Chapter, recognized nine graduating seniors. The dessert reception took place at Westwood Country Club in Vienna. The graduating seniors successfully completed their years in National Charity League, Inc.

Freeman Store Historical Plaque unveiled.

More than 100 members of the Vienna-area community and a cast of local dignitaries took part in the program at Freeman Store on April 21 at which the plaque commemorating Freeman Store’s historical designation in the Commonwealth was unveiled.
