It takes a lot more than blistering, pounding heat to keep Vienna-area families and neighbors away from ViVa! Vienna!, the Vienna Rotary Club’s three-day Memorial Day weekend festival.
Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Hits Vienna

It took a four-month period, two pounds each of butter, flour and sugar, eight pounds of mixed dried fruit, home-made marzipan and fondant, brandy and artistic finesse to create the spectacular Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee cake at The Pure Pasty Co. on Church Street.
Oakton Dentist Indicted
Hamada Makarita, 50, of Oakton, has been charged in a 15-count indictment of using his position as a dentist to illegally distribute prescription pills to patients, employees and women he dated. He was also charged with allegedly using the identity of another dentist to fraudulently bill an insurance company of more than $160,000 in claims.
Madeira Student Reaches Out to Orphans in Thailand
Charlotte Heffelmire, of Vienna, is a freshman at the Madeira School and spent her spring break in the tropics, but not to sunbathe and enjoy the beach. Instead, she presented several thousand dollars to the Pattaya Orphanage near the Gulf of Siam in Thailand. For the last several years Charlotte has been working and saving her money as well as collecting donations to help the orphans in Thailand.
Concerts on the Green Kick Off Summer
Free performances run two to three times a week.
The Town of Vienna concert series on the Town Green kicked off on May 11 when the U.S. Navy’s own Sea Chanters performed to a crowd-covered lawn.
A Musical About Tough Times
1st Stage present ‘Flora the Red Menace.’
It is daring of 1st Stage to take up the not often produced musical "Flora the Red Menace." It is a show that ran for only 87 performances in mid 1965. It is a musical about out-of-work actors putting on a musical about the search for love and jobs set in the Depression when lives were hurting.

Three-day Memorial Day weekend festival hits town on May 26.
It’s back, and more fun-filled and family-friendly than ever … It’s the annual three-day ViVa! Vienna! Memorial Day weekend festival sponsored by the Vienna Rotary Club, abundant with more than 325 vendors, all-day free live entertainment and 24 kid-friendly amusement rides. The Historic Church Street corridor closes down completely on May 27 and 28 when the area hums with festival life. On May 26, opening day of ViVa! Vienna!, Church Street remains open. Only amusement rides and the food court are operational on opening day.

"Ticket to Art," the May 19 fundraiser hosted by the Vienna Arts Society [VAS], has partnered with American Legion Post 180 of Vienna this year. The purchase of a $125 "ticket" to art entitles raffle winners to choose an original art piece valued between $150 and $650.
Green Hedges Students Win National Spanish Exam Medals
Several Spanish students from Green Hedges School in Vienna attained national recognition for excellent performance in the 2012 National Spanish Examinations. Students from Green Hedges School earned one gold and two silver medals.

Rachel VanPelt, family and consumer sciences teacher at Madison High, has been recognized by the Virginia Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Alumni and Associates organization with its Connie S. Rhoton Alumni and Associates Achievement Award for outstanding support of and involvement in the state organization.

As fiercely-competitive as she was in the sports arena, Khristin Kyllo was equally as fiercely-loyal to her friends and family. When she died suddenly in December 2010, in her dorm room at Princeton, her friends and classmates rallied around the family of the former James Madison High School softball and basketball standout.
Connolly Honored with Public Service Award
U.S. Rep/ Gerry Connolly (D-11) was honored for his support of the federal workforce and his efforts to promote good government at a ceremony Wednesday evening. Connolly received the 2012 Public Service Award from the Public Employees Roundtable, a non-partisan coalition of 30 organizations, and the Coalition for Effective Change.
