Thirty-two years after she started driving buses part time in Harrisonburg in college, Sandy Modell is retiring from her position as CEO and general manager of DASH, the Alexandria transit company. For 28 years, Modell led DASH through massive expansions. Since Modell started, the company has grown from one million passengers on 17 buses to four million passengers across 85 buses.

Vienna Church Takes Ash Wednesday Message Outdoors
On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, Emmanuel Lutheran Church will be offering Ashes and Dashes, a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition, in its church parking lot (at 2589 Chain Bridge Road) from 6:45-8:30 a.m. Emmanuel is part of a new nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people stepping outside of churches to mark the foreheads of interested passers-by in parking lots, at transit centers and on street corners with ashes and encourage them to gain a better sense of self by examining their humility and mortality, and seek renewal.

Hershey’s Track & Field Meet
Hundreds of city children competed in the annual Hershey's Track and Field Program on Saturday, May 19 in the Parker Gray Stadium at T.C. Williams High School. The meet featured the 50, 100, 200, and 400-meter dash; 800 and 1600 meter run, 4 x 100 relay, softball throw and standing long jump. Winners can advance through District, Regional, State and National Competitions.
