Vienna Police Highlights November 1 – 7, 2019

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from November 1 – 7, 2019.

INCIDENTS

Animal Case – Quarantine 500 Block Colony Court, NW October 27 2:15 p.m. A resident was bitten by a dog that she is fostering when she attempted to break up a fight between the dog and her daughter’s dog. The dog’s foster organization is handling the quarantine with a vet clinic. Fairfax County ACO will follow up on the quarantine as the vet is in their jurisdiction.

Police Service -- 537 Maple Avenue, West October 31 1:30 p.m. A citizen spoke with an officer regarding telephone calls she has been receiving at her home. The citizen, who resides in another jurisdiction, was advised that the calls were a scam and what measures she can take to protect herself from these scams.

Fraud -- 400 Block Blair Road, NW Between November 1 at 12:01 a.m. and November 2 at 12:01 a.m. A resident reported an unauthorized charge to their credit account.

Arrest – Abduction, Strangulation, Prevent 911 Call and Assault on an Officer -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West November 1, 4:40 a.m. A woman reported that a man, her boyfriend, began banging on the door of her hotel room. When she allowed him into the room he became irate and began assaulting her. When the woman grabbed a phone to call the police the man grabbed the phone and threw it out the window. The man walked out the door to throw the phone off the balcony and the woman closed the door to prevent him from re-entering the room. The man left the area before officers arrived. An officer transported the woman to an area hospital for medical treatment. Ofc. Colligan obtained three warrants for the man charging Abduction, Strangulation and Preventing Another from Making a 911 Call.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. officers located the man in his hotel room. As they were placing him under arrest he assaulted one of the officers. Ofc. McElhatten transported the 24-year-old man from Covingtons Corner Road in Vienna to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where the initial warrants were served on him and he was charged with Assault on a Police Officer. He was held without bond.

Grand Larceny -- Dunkin Donuts 314 Maple Avenue, West November 1 between 7: a.m. and 8 a.m. An employee advised that she left her cell phone in the bathroom. When she returned to find it, the phone was missing.

Suspicious Person -- Caboose Brewing Company 520 Mill Street, NE November 1, 9:11 p.m. Employees reported a customer who was acting irate and verbally abusive towards others in the establishment. When an employee asked the man to leave, he paid his bill and left, continuing to be disorderly. While officers were searching the area for the man he called the police department a couple of times. Officers were able to identify the man and it was determined that he was emotionally disturbed and had not broken any laws.

Animal Case -- 300 Block Sherwood Drive, NE November 1, 9:36 p.m. A resident reported an injured deer in their backyard. Officers found the deer was in grave condition and euthanized the animal.

Animal Case -- Beulah Road and Sideling Court, NE November 2, 10:44 a.m. A citizen reported a dog running at large. Ofc. McElhattan located the dog but was unable to find the animal’s owner. The dog was transported to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Emotionally Disturbed Person -- Park Terrace Court, SE November 4, 10:17 a.m. An emotionally disturbed man began calling the police department, irate because he did not like the way the department handled a complaint that he made. While speaking to the dispatcher, the man made threats regarding the person he complained about. A short time later he called a restaurant where he had previously had an issue and began harassing the employee. Sgt. Sheeran notified mental health clinicians and reported his behavior. The clinicians responded to the man’s home with officers but were unable to make contact with the man.

Emotionally Disturbed Person -- Vienna Police Station 215 Center Street, South November 4, 10:52 a.m. A man came to the police station to discuss various issues he has been having. An officer spoke to the man and addressed his concerns.

Open Door -- Vienna Vintner 320 Maple Avenue, East November 4, 12:36 p.m. Officers responding to an alarm found an open door. The business was searched and nothing appeared to have been disturbed. An employee was notified to secure the door.

Found Property -- 400 Block Center Street, South November 4, 4:50 p.m. Two bicycles were left abandoned in the rear parking lot of the Vienna Firehouse, near the Vienna Community Center.

Emotionally Disturbed Person -- Talahi Road, SE November 5, 5 a.m. A resident reported that his adult son came home and began acting aggressively towards him and his wife. The son became physically aggressive and began to make threats towards his father. PFC Post transported the man to an area medical facility where he was held on a Temporary Detention Order and was to be evaluated and held for mental health treatment.

Open Door -- Mod Pizza 168 Maple Avenue, West November 5, 7:54 a.m. Officers responding to the report of an alarm at the restaurant found an open door. Nothing appeared out of place inside the restaurant. An employee was notified to reset the alarm and secure the business.

Welfare Check -- 1100 Drake Street, SW November 5, 8:33 p.m. A citizen requested a welfare check on her ex-boyfriend after she received a concerning text message from him. Officers responded to the man’s residence, however, he was not at home and the homeowner was not aware of any issues with the man.

Found Property -- Nutley Street and Courthouse Road, SW November 5, 9:11 p.m. After investigating an accident an officer found a check in the roadway belonging to one of the drivers. The driver was notified that the check would be held at the police station for safekeeping until he can retrieve it.

Grand Larceny -- 1200 Block Kelley Street, SW Between November 5 at 5 p.m. and November 6 at 5:30 p.m. An employee with a construction company reported a piece of equipment that was stolen from one of their construction sites.

Disorderly -- 100 Block Branch Road, SE November 7, 11:56 a.m. A citizen advised that he was approached by a man in the parking lot of 150 Branch Road, SE. The man asked how much he wanted to sell his vehicle for, then became disorderly when he said he was not interested. The citizen advised the man threw a piece of chocolate at his vehicle before driving off. The man was located and advised it was the citizen who became irate when he asked about the vehicle, so he immediately left the area. The citizen was advised of the warrant process should he wish to pursue charges for the man.
