Vienna Police Highlights Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2021

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2021.

INCIDENTS

Fraud -- 300 Block Sherwood Drive, NE Jan. 7, 9 p.m.

A resident searched Google on how to close her eBay account. The resident called a phone number that was provided in her search and was advised that her eBay account had been hacked and charges made to the account. She was instructed that she would need to purchase eBay gift cards and provide the customer service team with the information on those cards. After providing the gift card numbers, the resident realized the scam.

Arrest – Domestic Assault -- Locust Street, SE

Jan. 26, 11:30 p.m.

A resident reported that her adult son was acting disorderly and destroying property inside of their home. The resident also stated that her son physically assaulted her.

Ofc. McElhattan arrested the 21-year-old man from Locust Street, SE, Vienna. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Domestic Assault and an Emergency Protective Order was issued.

Fraud -- 400 Block Nutley Street, NW

Between Jan. 27 at 12 p.m. and Jan. 28 at 2:53 p.m.

An elderly resident reported that he was contacted by someone claiming payment was needed to prevent his internet security from expiring. The resident provided the caller with his bank account information. He was further instructed to purchase gift cards and provide them with the information from the gift cards. After providing the caller with the gift cards, the resident realized it was a scam.

Emotionally Disturbed Person --Westbriar Drive, NE

Jan. 28, 4:03 p.m.

A resident reported that he was concerned over his juvenile son’s behavior and mental health. Officers attempted to speak with the juvenile, but the juvenile refused. Mental Health professionals were consulted and advised they would visit the home the following day to assess the juvenile.

Petit Larceny-- 400 Block Marshall Road, SW

Between Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 29 at 6 a.m.

A resident reported that she has had her recycling trash bins stolen from the curbside twice in the past week.

Lost Property-- Giant Food, 359 Maple Avenue, East

Jan. 30, 3:30 p.m.

A resident reported that they lost their wallet in the parking lot.

Narcotics Violation --Vienna Woods Swim Club, 129 Harmony Drive, SW

Jan. 31, 7:41 p.m.

An officer observed three occupied vehicles in the pool parking lot. Upon the officer’s interaction with the occupants (two juveniles and an adult), he detected an odor of marijuana. The juveniles were found in possession of a measurable amount of marijuana. Their parents were notified and responded to the parking lot. The adult was permitted to leave. Both juveniles were given verbal counseling and released to the custody of their parents. The marijuana was turned over to the Property Officer for destruction.

Stolen Vehicle Recovery -- 100 Block Branch Road, SE

Feb. 2, 12:29 p.m.

A State Trooper from North Carolina requested our officers check the area for a vehicle stolen from their jurisdiction that had been tracked to the area. Officers located and recovered the stolen vehicle.

CRASHES

Maple Avenue and Nutley Street, SW -- Jan. 23, 7:47 a.m.

Vehicle-2 was stopped at a red traffic light on westbound Maple Avenue at Nutley Street. Vehicle 1 was northbound on Nutley Street, SW, turning right to go eastbound on Maple Avenue. Driver 1 was traveling at a high rate of speed, skidded across both eastbound travel lanes, struck the brick median, struck a street sign, and sideswiped Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Reckless Driving.

Maple Avenue and Park Street, SE -- Jan. 27, 2:53 p.m.

Vehicle-1 was traveling east on Maple Avenue, approaching the red traffic light at Park Street. Vehicle-2 was southbound on Park Street, turning left onto eastbound Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 entered the intersection and collided with Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

East Street near Maple Avenue, SE --Jan. 29, 2:44 p.m.

Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on East Street, approaching Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 exited the parking lot of 527 Maple Avenue, East, struck the driver’s side of Vehicle-2, and then fled the scene without stopping.

100 Block Church Street, NW -- Jan. 30, 6:36 p.m.

Vehicle-2 was legally parked on the roadway when it was struck by Vehicle-1. Driver-1 fled the scene without stopping.

300 Block Maple Avenue, East -- Feb. 3, 1:09 p.m.

Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound, attempting to turn left into the shopping center parking lot when the two vehicles collided.

Center Street and Maple Avenue, SE -- Feb. 3, 1:25 p.m.

Vehicle-2 (a Town vehicle) was northbound on Center Street, stopped for the red traffic light. Vehicle-1 struck the rear bumper of Vehicle-2.
