Vienna’s Results of the Drug Take Back Initiative
On Sept. 26, the Town of Vienna Police Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, participated in the 10th National Drug Take Back Initiative. As a result of that initiative the Town of Vienna Police Department collected and safely disposed of 284 pounds of expired or no longer needed medications from area citizens. The September initiative collected approximately 27,292 pounds of medications statewide. The Vienna Police Department plans to continue its participation with the DEA for future initiatives.
Navy Federal to Host SHRED-eral Day Oct. 17
Navy Federal Credit Union will welcome members and neighbors across the country to its Navy SHRED-eral event Saturday, Oct. 17. The 72 participating Navy Federal locations are spread over 22 states.
Event attendees at participating Navy Federal branches are encouraged to bring their personal documents to be shred on-site, free of charge. Navy Federal is inviting participants to bring up to four 12” x 24” boxes of paper and documents, but the credit union advises that CDs and other hard substances will not be accepted.

American Legion Post to Host Buffet Breakfast

Candlelight Tour at the Historic Flint Hill Cemetery in Oakton, Oct. 24
The Flint Hill Cemetery Association is sponsoring a candle and lantern tour of the cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Gather at the Church of the Brethren, 10025 Courthouse Road, Oakton, starting at 6 p.m. Tour start 7 p.m. Local historian Jim Lewis will discuss the history of the cemetery, which dates to the Civil War, and will detail the lives of some of those interred there.
Donation of $10 per person encouraged to support the ongoing work of the nonprofit Flint Hill Cemetery Association, a 501(c)(13) organization. Refreshments will be served.

Historic Vienna, Inc. to Participate in Afternoons on Church
Historic Vienna, Inc. (the Freeman Store and Museum), 131 Church Street, NE will participate in the sixth and final Town of Vienna Afternoons on Church, Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. The theme of the event is “Shop Local, Shop Vienna.” As on previous Sundays local businesses will participate and there will be a variety of entertainment and games for the kids.
The Freeman Store will feature another original play by HVI Board Member Jon Vrana, titled “Back to the Future – Vienna, Virginia,” about the Town’s history since 1890. In addition, Mardi Trout, a member of the Northern Virginia Bead Society, will display and sell her handcrafted jewelry.
The Store will be offering new and vintage items for sale including the brand new 2015 Ornament, the 16th in the collection. The two-sided ornament features the original Vienna Volunteer Fire Department building on Church Street on one face, and the stores that later occupied the building, Worthington’s gift shop and The Full Cry Shop, a ladies clothing store, on the other. Used books “by the bag full” will be for sale, as well as a selection of old-fashioned candies. There will also be a Girl Scout Troop led scavenger hunt, and the Ayr Hill Garden Club will be offering spring bulbs for sale.
Vietnam Veterans to Hear on ‘General Grant’s Overland Campaign’
Chapter 227, Vietnam Veterans of America Inc., invites all veterans, friends, and the general public to attend the Nov. 19 chapter meeting at Neighbor’s Restaurant, 262D Cedar Lane, Cedar Lane Shopping Center, Vienna, at 7:30 p.m. Col. Ben Buckley, U.S. Army (Ret.) will discuss “General Grant’s Overland Campaign in Virginia.” Col. Buckley holds a Master of American History degree and leads tours of local Civil War battlefields. He is involved in the effort to create a new interpretive trail of the North Anna River Civil War Battlefield. He is a two-your Vietnam War veteran. Young Men’s Service League Accepting Applications for Class of 2020
Young Men’s Service League is a nonprofit organization that encourages young men and their mothers to pursue philanthropic involvement in their community and provides an opportunity to enhance mother/son relationships.
Young Men’s League Vienna-Oakton’s provisional class includes 31 rising ninth-grade boys in 5 middle schools in Northern Virginia. YMSLVO provides mothers and their sons the opportunity to volunteer in the community, improve leadership skills and develop new life skills.
In November, YMSLVO will join other YMSL chapters across the country in executing their first Ultimate Gift Project. Associated groups include Alternative House, Cameron’s Chocolates, Community of Faith, Down’s Syndrome Association, Food for Others, Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, Honor Flight, Special Olympics, The Lamb Center, and Women Giving Back.
